A Devon pub serving free alcoholic drinks has been closed by police.

The Cross Keys Inn on Gold Street, Tiverton was closed by police on Friday 7 August at 10.50pm under section 161 of the Licensing Act.

Around 20 intoxicated customers were found to be in the pub. The Cross Keys had been banned from selling alcohol on 24 July following a police notice and until further allegations of disorder could be investigated and licensing conditions adhered to.

On Friday, 7 August a licensing check was made after evidence had been obtained that alcohol had been given away to customers since 3pm. Two people were arrested for breach of the peace after abusing officers but were later released.

"Due to clear concerns over disorder and the need to ensure public safety, the premises were then instructed to close," said a police spokesman. "At the time, there were up to 20 intoxicated people present.

"Beat managers, patrol staff and special constables from across Mid Devon, together with officers from Exeter and two police dog units from North Devon were deployed to ensure that the premises closed.

"Relevant notices have been displayed on the premises and the closure order has been extended until the Police can take the matter to magistrates to consider any appropriate action.

"This is a highly unusual action for the Police and demonstrates the willingness of both agencies to ensure that licensed premises are well-managed, comply with the law and remain safe places for everyone to enjoy."
