British classics top pub food choice

Pub diners still want classic, traditional pub dishes such as fish and chips or bangers and mash, according to a survey by the Mystery Dining Company (TMDC).

Bangers and mash: an old favourite

The most popular reason for choosing to eat in a pub rather than a restaurant (49%) was the menu itself.

“Classic meals such as fish and chips, bangers or pie with mash, homemade lasagne and Sunday roasts remain firm favourites with over 90% of the group,” explained TMDC’s director Steven Pike.

“It’s important to understand that customers still want a pub to be a pub.".

Nearly two thirds of respondents would not eat in a pub that served poor quality food.

The survey said food sales could be increased by improving the atmosphere, service levels, convenience and value for money.

Other areas suggested for improvement are training staff more efficiently, better product sourcing and introducing more sharing options.

The survey included 433 people who regularly visit pubs.
