Police use texts to crackdown on drink driving
Surrey police will use text messages in a bid to crack down on drink-driving this Christmas.
Caught out: drink driving campaign
Calls to helpline 118 118 requesting pub, bar or club information in the county will receive a drink-drive warning via the responding text message.
“Surrey police vigorously enforces the drink-drive law every day but, with all the socialising that the festive season brings, there can be an increased temptation for people to drink and drive,” said chief inspector of Surrey road police Dave Mason.
The anti-drink-drive campaign will also include posters, leaflets and Facebook and feature images such as a car crashed into a tree with the slogan “He should have crashed at yours”.
Bluetooth messaging at pubs and clubs is also being used.
“The clear message is that drinking and driving has serious consequences — you risk killing or seriously injuring yourself or another person and you risk arrest and court,” said Mason.
“If convicted you will face a fine, disqualification and a criminal record and you may go to prison.”
