Duke of Westminster's man buys pub
A former finance director for the Duke of Westminster's estate has bought a freehold country pub in Herefordshire - and has hired a well-known food writer and broadcaster to help devise the menu.
Darren Rawcliffe bought the Portway Inn & Hotel from private owners for an undisclosed sum off an asking price of £645,000. Christie + Co handled the sale.
Rawcliffe decided to set up business in the country after 20 years of living and working in London.
The pub is 1.5 miles from the village of Staunton-on-Wye and features a 40-cover traditional main bar, 50-cover contemporary restaurant and a coffee lounge. there are also 10 en-suite letting rooms, a two-bedroom owner’s house and a two-acre garden.
Colin Pressdee, consultant chef, TV presenter and writer, will help Rawcliffe devise new menus for Portway using fresh local produce.
Both trade areas are being refurbished with letting rooms due to be updated in early 2010.
