Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the BBPA, chooses his top 10
I am training for the London Marathon and the iPod I was given at Christmas is keeping me going over the 16 or 17 miles I usually run on Saturdays. I sing (only in the church choir) and enjoy a wide range of music. It has always been important to me, but the secret is that it has to be uplifting.
1. Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon & Garfunkel
This is the first song that I really remember, and it was also the very first record I ever owned. My elder brother, Mike, gave it to me in 1970.
2. I’m Gonna Be (500 miles), The Proclaimers
This great song has a very good beat, particularly to run and sing to.
3. Any Dream Will Do, Andrew Lloyd Webber
I have always enjoyed Lloyd Webber’s music and this song, from Joseph & the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, is one of my top favourites. Several years ago I met Tim Rice, who rather amusingly appeared in his pyjamas!
4. Highland Cathedral, The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards
I have this song as my mobile ring-tone — it reminds me of Scotland and our family often walks there during the February half-term. I will be up there again this year, trying to make it to the summit of a few more Munros.
5. Pie Jesu, Sarah Brightman
Every time I hear this song, I wish that I could sing it. It’s a supremely beautiful piece.
6. Land of Hope and Glory (Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1), Elgar
I am a great sports fan and associate this with England, whether it be rugby, football or the Commonwealth Games. It is always played when we win, so who could forget it or not include it in their top 10?
7. Your Song, Ewan McGregor
Although I always associate this song with Elton John, I really enjoyed Ewan McGregor’s version, which he sang in Moulin Rouge. It’s a very enjoyable film with inspiring music. I didn’t realise Ewan McGregor could sing until I heard this.
8. Thank You for the Music, Abba
I share an interest in this group with my daughter, but perhaps not with the rest of my family. It is good for running and sounds great on my iPod.
9. Take Me Home, Country Roads, John Denver
Country & western is not really my thing, but I enjoyed this many years ago, and more recently I’ve heard a variety of cover versions.
10. Four Strong Winds, Neil Young
Great lyrics, plus excellent backing. I enjoyed the recording of his performance at Live 8.
