Pubs warned over doorstaff hiring licence
Licensees have been warned to ensure they have the correct licence to hire doorstaff privately.
SIA: regulates licensing of doorstaff
It came after Burton licensee Judith Doughty was fined £160 at magistrates after hiring a door supervisor without a non-frontline licence and one doorman whose licence was out of date.
Magistrates heard the pub previously hired doorstaff through an agency but employed them directly once that agreement ended.
Doughty had actually filled in the form to apply for a licence but did not include a picture of herself.
Doug Walton, defending, cited personal circumstances because she had recently undergone surgery.
He said the licensee had begun employing agency doorstaff and intended to apply for a licence herself.
Doughty’s fine was reduced from £250 for pleading guilty to charges under the 2001 Private Security Industry Act. She was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
A spokeswoman for doorstaff licensing body the Security Industry Authority said: “The designated premises supervisor responsible for employing doorstaff needs a non-frontline licence. If they were agency staff they don’t need it.”
