Hotspots mapped for pub curbs

Maps charting alcohol-related ambulance pick-ups against drinking hotspots in East Midlands towns could be used as evidence in pub and club licence reviews.

Nottingham: maps could be used in review of cumulative impact zone

The East Midlands Public Health Observatory has mapped the link between ambulance pick-ups from 9pm to 6am and pubs and clubs in nine East Midlands towns.

Police said the maps would be “another piece in the jigsaw to help partners understand the impact of alcohol misuse” and the data could help review Nottingham’s cumulative impact zone.

Elaine Rodger, chair of the UK Public Health Association Alcohol & Violence Special Interest Group, said it was further evidence that local authorities should have stronger licensing powers.

The nine towns and cities make up almost a fifth of the Home Office’s priority areas for tackling drunk and rowdy behaviour. Two — Derby and Nottingham — are in the national top five for density of pubs and clubs.
