The Scillonian Club
Full description
A rare opportunity awaits the person-or persons- who fancy being at the helm of a members’ club in idyllic, sub-tropical islands off the SW coast of the United Kingdon ,the unique and lovely Isles of Scilly .
The long –established Scillonian Club ,centrally situated on the main island of St.Mary’s , is nearly 90 years old with a royal birth as it was opened in 1921 by a future King no less - the then Prince of Wales whose Duchy of Cornwall at the time owned the building .To this day the fleur de lys is to be seen on the sign that hangs outside it .
During his many years’ association with the islands the former Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson would regularly use the club .
The attraction of its bars, restaurant and range of games facilities has kept it consistently at the centre of social life ever since ensuring it plays a pivotal role in island life .
One of the country’s longest holiday seasons (April- October)ensures that as well as a loyal local trade many visitors avail themselves of the club’s temporary membership system while on holiday .
There are two bars with sufficient space to stage live entertainment and a restaurant with a stunning view over St.Mary’s harbour towards the distant fringe of the outer islands, or off-islands as they are called and sunsets to die for .
There is a snooker/billiards room with two tables , a recreation room ,card room and amenities for such popular past-times as bingo, whist and bridge. The club is the place to which islanders turn to stage functions as do clubs/societies for meetings .Birdwatchers during the autumn migration have historically flocked to its amenities.
In small islands where accommodation is at a premium the Club is well placed, boasting a three -bedroomed self -contained flat overlooking the harbour and four- bedroomed self -contained staff accommodation as well.
The six- year tenancy –starting rate £38,000 per annum - holds an option to renew for a further six years. Further particulars can be obtained from Sue Badcock (01720-422454) or/and Barry Archer (01720-422700).
Expressions of interest should be directed to The Secretary, The Scillonian Club, The Strand, Hugh Town, St.Mary’s,Isles of Scilly to be received by September 19.
