Q I have been told to do a licensing course. How do I find out about these sort of courses?

A There are a number of organisations which provide licensing courses and there are several ways that you can find out the details for these. The local magistrates' court may know of any colleges in your locality which provide a course.

If you are employed by a company then it may provide a licensing course on an in-house basis. However, the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) provides a number of courses which are specifically aimed at licensees.

In addition, the courses that the BII run are recognised on a national basis as being a suitable qualification for a licensee to hold. In fact, there are many courts who will grant transfer of liquor licences without the need for attendance providing that you can prove that you have passed a BII course.

The BII can be contacted directly on 01276 684449 and they will be able to advise on colleges and other educational establishments in your area which can provide a course.
