A pub near Bath is giving a warm welcome to dogs and their owners by setting up a dogs' dinner association.

Licensee of the Old Crown at Kelston, Jo Ward, explained that, although the pub does not admit children under 14, it is frequently overrun with dogs of all shapes and sizes.

She said that often people found the pub for the first time while taking their dogs on a country walk.

Peter Stow, who is organising the association, said that the dogs were an important part of the pub especially since trade had been badly hit by the foot-and-mouth epidemic.

Mr Straw said that this new initiative should encourage owners to take their dogs on walks and come back to the pub for a drink.

He added that regulars wanted to show their appreciation to their pets, which sit with them in the pub all year round.

At least 20 dogs are said to be regulars of the pub and active members of the association will meet to discuss fund-raising, menus and rules.

There will be four days a year where owners and their dogs will meet others and sit down to a specially organised meal.
