An innovative competition aimed at finding the Spirit Group's cleanest and friendliest pub resulted in a Caribbean cruise for the winning licensees.

Simon and Su Haynes, who run the Star in Bishop's Stortford, Essex, fought off competition from more than 1,000 pubs in the nation-wide estate.

The Spirit Day competition rewards good standards of quality and care.

Speaking at the awards presentation last month, The Publican Newspaper's Editor Lorna Harrison said that The Publican Newspaper/Britvic Pub-Goers Survey showed that standards of cleanliness and good service were the key to a successful business.

"Good staff, a good smile and a clean environment really matter," she said.

James Carboni, business development manager, said of the winning couple: "Simon and Su make a tired pub look brand new."

Finalists were: Alison Carr and Carolann Myatt, Q's, Victoria Park, Hackney; Kevin and Jackie McCarthy, Eagle & Child, Liverpool; Jim and Kath Craig, Air Balloon, Blackpool; Dave Stephenson and Stephanie Mullen, Beechwood, Glasgow; Ray Greenough and Debbie Davies, Millhouse, St Helens; Karl Mitchell, Mr Q's, Links Hotel, Fleet; Richard Baxter, BRB@Tankard, Kennington; Simon Middleton, the Duke, Acton Green.
