Customers at a Birmingham pub narrowly escaped death when a car ploughed through the side of the building after a collision with a bus.

Drinkers at the Queen's Arms in the Highgate area of the city watched in horror as the car careered through the side of the pub into the bar area.

Luckily nobody in the pub was hurt, but licensee Barbara Melody is now lobbying the council to do something to stop drivers from speeding near her pub following what was the latest of four accidents in only two months.

"The problem is that we're situated by two roads where people should give way but don't," she said. "Saturday's crash has caused a lot of damage and we had to shut down as a gas pipe burst.

"Luckily we had a lot less people in the pub than usual as we had decided not to show the England match and no-one in the pub was hurt. But if we'd have been packed full of football fans God knows what would have happened."

Over the last seven years at the pub she said she had seen dozens of accidents but has so far failed to persuade the council to act to make the road safer.
