New safety tests are on the way for pull-out bottle tops to combat fears that they could cause choking. More than 120 million containers with the re-closeable lids were sold in Britain last year, many of them in pubs. The British Soft Drink Association wants tests to ensure manufacturers meet new guidelines on safety. Festival fun The popular Manchester Food and Drink Festival, now in its fifth year, started on Tuesday. The event lasts a fortnight and sees a number of the city's bars and food and drink retailers taking part with their own special events and menus. Game for a laugh Regent Inns is to open a£2.2m Jongleurs comedy club and Bar Risa in Reading. The venue will open in December on the site of the former Boardwalk public house in Friar Street. Another opening is planned for Leeds in the near future. The first Jongleurs opened in 1997 in Leicester. Catch of the day Scottish & Newcastle's Chef & Brewer chain will support National Seafood Week, which runs from 4-11 October. All 118 pubs will compete to win a trip to the Deep, an underground aquarium, in Hull. The Chef & Brewer brand team will take over the pub that sells the biggest volume of seafood during Seafood Week ­ while the staff are enjoying a day out.
