S&N Retail has won the prestigious John Sainsbury Award for its staff training and development. Guests at the IGD Food Industry Awards heard that the pub-owning subsidiary of Scottish & Newcastle had created a training programme called The Guild aimed at attracting talented chefs, encouraging them to raise food standards and providing a clearer career path. Majestyk mauled A Leeds nightclub, The Majestyk, has been strongly criticised by a local watchdog Alcohol and Drug Services for "utterly irresponsible behaviour." The club claimed a cut-price drinks promotion to "get fkud" on £1-a-time drinks was "light-hearted, and designed with a student sense of humour in mind." It insisted it would not sell alcohol to any customer that was already intoxicated. Disabled test John Grooms, a charity for disabled people, has completed a "secret shopper" campaign in pubs and promises to name and shame those failing to provide sufficient access or facilities. But there's high praise for the Toby Carvery in Borehamwood, Herts. The Six Continents-owned pub/restaurant had "extremely helpful staff and excellent street accessibility." And they're off Pubs and sports bars will be hoping to attract new customers with a series of live lunchtime horse races during a half-hour show starting on Monday. The programme will go out on both Channel 4 and Sky Digital. Stalwart dies Friends and family were mourning the tragic death of campaigning licensee Chris McCabe, 43, who ran the Rose Cottage Tavern in Redruth, Cornwall. McCabe, who had a history of heart trouble, died in his sleep.
