has reason to get shirty Chancellor Gordon Brown could be in for some unexpected laundry as UK pub chain chiefs take a lead from Germany and send him the shirts off their backs. JD Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin is among those planning to send the Chancellor a shirt as a symbolic complaint about recent increases in duty and in employers' National Insurance. Said Martin, who is looking out an old squash shirt to send: "By putting up the duty 11p on packs of premium spirits, he has nicked £250,000 from industry. "Duty costs the average pub 10% of their profits. He hasvery definitely had the shirt off people's backs." The campaign, which has been initiated by The Daily Telegraph, follows a similar stunt in Germany, where around 33,500 old shirts have been sent to Gerhard Schroeder, as a protest at recent tax hikes. The German leader has also become the subject for a satiric pop song The Tax Song which has shot to the top of the charts there. Like his German counterpart, Gordon Brown will be sending any shirts received to charity.
