Using high-pressure gas cylinders in confined spaces, such as cellars, is obviously a potential health hazard. Thus the British Compressed Gases Association in collaboration with the Health & Safety Executive and the British Beer & Pub Association has produced an eight-page guide on the correct use of gas cylinders. It outlines the responsibilities of the supplier and how to monitor supply quality, both in terms of gas and cylinder maintenance and management. The guide also contains a list of reputable suppliers. Advice on what to do, and what not to do, is detailed together with information on stocking carbon dioxide, mixed gas and nitrogen cylinders including understanding the importance of labelling, colour coding, serial numbers, cylinder and valve testing, and traceability of supplier. Gas equipment specialist CryoService is offering licensees a free site survey if they contact the firm before March. The company will also waive the first month's standing charge on its range of automated cellar gas systems for new customers who sign up before that date. CryoService removes the costly and time-consuming task of changing individual gas cylinders by installing a permanent, fully automatic system featuring large gas containers that the firm tops up regularly. Recent studies by the company suggest that, each time a licensee has to make an unscheduled visit to the cellar to change a gas cylinder, the lost revenue can be worth £10 to £15, or perhaps higher at peak times in a large pub.
