You have got to feel some sympathy for cider maker Bulmer's. Last year, it revealed a financial black hole running into millions of pounds, which heralded the arrival of Miles Templeman as the new chief exec to extricate itself out of the mire. Its wholesale distribution subsidiary Beer Seller is now attracting the attention of predators as the Hereford-based company seeks to find some cash to help. Snifter wonders if it is just coincidence that Bulmer's is in the same financial dilemma as the football team it sponsors with its Strongbow brand Leeds United. Leeds United's problems both on-and-off the field have been well documented. Unfortunately for Bulmer's, it appears to be caught up in something similar. The company is trawling bars in Florida after drip mats were distributed with the slogan: "Strongbow Helping fuel soccer violence for almost 40 years". Bulmer's said it had rejected the mats after an advertising agency in America had devised the slogan and was stunned when they began appearing in bars about two years ago. A company spokesman said: "The slogan was a dreadful error of judgement on the part on a marketing manager in America who no longer works for the company.
