Chairman Tim spends a good deal of time nowadays touring his pubs to spot new ideas and keep a finger on the pulse at the sharp end of the business. Hutson's role at JD Wetherspoon has become "team leader", actioning Martin's ideas. "Tim identifies the problems and it's my job to solve them," he says. Hutson also now deals with half of new licence applications, visiting all the pubs within half a mile of a new Wetherspoon outlet. Hutson, in his late 30s, has been with the company for more than 12 years, starting as an area manager after leaving Allied. He opened the company's 21st pub the Elbow Room in Crouch End. His appetite for detail is enormous. Hutson has admitted that a local newspaper review that described a new pub as "like an aircraft hangar" will prompt improvement action because "there's probably some kernel of truth in there".
