A spat is developing between Bacardi and JD Wetherspoon after the latter's decision to de-list the white rum brand. JD Wetherspoon, which has now replaced Bacardi with six rums including Havana Club, Appleton and Bundaberg, is to publish a letter from the spirit supplier in the next edition of its Wetherspoon News, which has a print run of 500,000. The letter reminds JD Wetherspoon of the need to advise customers who ask for a Bacardi and Coke that only alternative types of rum are available. Chairman Tim Martin admits to feeling "piqued" by the letter, which came after Bacardi-Martini failed to agree a reduced price for the rum. Martin said: "We thought it would be interesting for customers, some of whom may feel aggrieved, to see the full picture." Martin said pub managers had seen training videos and had till reminders to ensure customers were made aware that Bacardi was no longer available. A Bacardi-Martini spokesman said: "The letter sent to Wether-spoon's does not threaten legal action, but it does respectfully point out that operational procedures need to be put in place, not only to ensure customers are not misled, but also to protect bar staff and licence holders from contravening legislation in relation to trade descriptions and trade marks." l JDW pulls out of Dublin scheme p5
