Host stabbed in robbery
A man who stabbed a licensee in the face with a screwdriver has admitted wounding. Bolton Crown Court heard that Jody Allen, 22, stabbed Michael Shepherd, of the George and Dragon in Bury, while he was trying to rob the pub. Allen pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He will be sentenced after standing trial on a separate account of burglary. Glass door smashed A 20-year-old mother smashed a pub door pane after being ejected from a Grimsby pub. Grimsby Magistrates Court heard that Helen Sears was thrown out of the Lloyds No 1 Ice Barque in the town at around 1am on 4 August because of her disruptive behaviour. She was upset after a young man called her a "fat slag". Sears returned shortly afterwards and kicked the pub door, causing it to break. She told police: "I got mad. I went for the bouncer but got the door instead. I am very sorry I lost my temper." Her defence said that she had a two-year-old child and had suffered post-natal depression. She was given a one-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £150 compensation. Warning on licences Police in Leicester are warning licensees of two bars where there have been sightings of under 18s buying alcohol that they risk losing their licences if they don't stop serving youngsters. Officers said that they are disappointed with the number of children found to be drinking in the city during the summer holiday. Alcohol Concern estimated that as many as 15,000 young people in Leicester drink alcohol at least once a week. To tackle the problem, officers will first write letters to licensees found serving alcohol to minors. If this fails they will ask to speak to pub managers at the police station. PC Karen Holdridge said that the main aim was to work with licensees to beat underage drinking but closing pubs remained "an option". "We are not into just taking licences away. Our aim is to work closely with licensees to tackle crime," she said. "It does not harm these places to make sure they are vigorous about sticking to the law." Cash stolen in attack Armed robbers attacked a member of staff while he was cashing up at a Suffolk pub and fled with a large sum of money. The man said he was struck on the head in the early hours of last Tuesday morning at the Owl and the Pussycat in Felixstowe. The blow left him unconscious for a few minutes. When he recovered he realised that a substantial amount of cash had been stolen. The man was treated for head injuries. Gun incident men bailed Two men have been bailed following an incident at a North-amptonshire pub, in which a man was thought to have brandished a gun in a beer garden. The men, aged 20 and 29, were arrested last Friday following the incident at the Spread Eagle in Corby two days before. Northamptonshire Police said that a man was thought to have brandished a firearm during a row in the pub garden as more than 100 terrified customers looked on. No shots were fired and nobody was injured. The men, who were arrested on the Kingswood estate, were held at Corby police station and bailed on Saturday. Suspicion of murder Five men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died following a fight outside a Berkshire pub. Police found a man unconscious when they were called to deal with an incident at the Assembly, Slough, in the early hours of Sunday morning. The victim, who was in his 30s, was pronounced dead on arrival at nearby Weston Park Hospital. Four men were arrested at the scene two in their 20s, one in his 40s and one in his 50s. A fifth man was arrested on Sunday afternoon. Thames Valley Police are still awaiting a post mortem to determine the cause of death. They are appealing for witnesses to come forward with information.
