The Hope & Anchor was the winner of the first gastro pub of the year title in the Tio Pepe London Restaurant Awards. The pub, near the Old Vic, Waterloo, opened last year and has been lauded as one of the biggest names to watch in the industry. It is headed up by Michael Belben who was one of the co-founders of original gastro pub the Eagle in Farringdon. It is the first time a gastro pub category has been included in the prestigious awards. A spokeswoman said the new category was added in recognition of the growing prevalence of quality gastro pubs. The Hope & Anchor was also shortlisted for the new restaurant of the year award. This was won by Tom Aikens' Restaurant in Chelsea, which also won best restaurant. Among other pubs shortlisted for the awards was the House and Rocket in London. Belben and his team were presented with the London Gastro Pub of the Year award during an awards ceremony in London.
