CAMRA is encouraging pubs to stock mild ales during May as part of a celebration of the traditional British beer variety. The campaign is built around National Mild Day on Saturday, May 8, but the real ale lobbying group hopes that licensees will give their customers a chance to try one of Britain's finest styles of beer right through the month.

Mild, usually darker in colour than bitter, has been around for more than 400 years, but is in danger of disappearing in some parts of the country.

To help pubs promote mild, CAMRA is organising events including mild pub trails, visits to pubs that cook with mild, brewery tours and even mild-and-curry nights.

There is a CAMRA poster available to help in-pub promotions, and a range of mild recipes can be found on the CAMRA website at www.camra.org.uk.

John Norman, CAMRA's light and dark beers spokesperson said: "Mild is one of Britain's finest styles of beer but it can be difficult for the beer drinker to locate pubs that regularly serve it.

"Unfortunately this means that many discerning beer drinkers never get the opportunity to try the delights of mild.

"I would urge all licensees to put on some mild in May, promote it to the local pub-goers and this will hopefully benefit the pub, the consumer and go some way to saving this wonderful drink from disappearing from British pubs forever."

The trade's best selling mild is Bank's Original from Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries. Other milds from Britain's regional brewers include Brains Dark, Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby, Hydes Light Mild, Gales Festival Mild, Tetley's Mild, and Moorhouses Black Cat.
