Digby Jones, director-general of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), has pledged to help argue the trade's case on red tape and other issues to the government.

During a visit to the St Austell Brewery in Cornwall, part of an industry fact-finding tour of the area, Mr Jones (pictured) said: "The brewing industry has undergone major change in the last few years and this is a business that has adapted well.

"My job is to try to ensure that the government understands the sort of conditions this business and others need, in order to continue to move forward."

Mr Jones, accompanied by Amanda Wilkinson, CBI director for the South West, was taken on a brewery tour led by St Austell managing director, James Staughton.

Mr Staughton said: "We face many challenges in the years ahead - such as increasing red tape and the threat of levies to pay for policing - and it's very important to have the CBI's support to help ensure St Austell Brewery continues to grow and contribute to the region's prosperity."
