by John Harrington Nottinghamshire MPs are to lobby Parliament for a change in the law to force the county's licensees to pay for extra police at weekend evenings. It follows a meeting at Westminster last week between around seven Nottinghamshire MPs and senior police from the county. The MPs were told that the business tax paid by licensed venues in Nottinghamshire is too low when considering the strain on police resources caused by alcohol-fuelled disorder. Nottinghamshire Police Authority chairman John Clarke said: "We told [the MPs] that we have such a rapidly increasing pub culture, but no extra money. The business tax should have been increased to offset that. We are spread pretty thinly, especially on Friday and Saturday evening. "We are not out to bankrupt any business but we want them to make a contribution to the cost of policing the citycentre and the lively suburbs." He added: "If it is done in the right manner, the businesses will say that we have a good point." Police in Nottingham which was the focus of a high-profile BBC Panorama programme about the effects of binge drinking in Britain have spoken in favour of paid-for policing in the past. This is the first time MPs have backed plans for it. The proposal met with a cool reception from Nottingham city centre Pubwatch chairman Michael Knight. "All licensed premises in Nottingham city centre pay enough in taxes at the moment so why should we pay more to the police?" he said. "I don't see why we should have to top up their bank balance." Knight added: "The payments would have to be put on the cost of drinks so our customers would be made to suffer.
