JD Wetherspoon and Shepherd Neame have become the latest companies to pledge a donation to National Pubwatch.

A total of £21,000 has now been pledged to help National Pubwatch reach a target of £50,000 a year to enable members to deal with their growing workload. Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch, Caledonian Brewery, Greene King, and the BII had previously pledged cash for the voluntary group, which supports pubwatch schemes across the country.

Malcolm Eidmans, the org-anisation's secretary and co- founder, said that since National Pubwatch was set up in 1997, it had grown 'far beyond what could have been expected at the time.

Its newsletter alone had risen in circulation from just 500 copies an issue to 16,000 or 17,000, Eidmans said. It had lost one sponsor in Yates Group when the company was taken over by Laurel.

But Eidmans explained that a meeting was being set up with Julian Sargeson, chief executive of Laurel, to see if the company would replace Yates as a sponsor.

Meanwhile, National Pub-watch is considering holding its next conference in December in the north of England. The last conference, in April, was in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, and the committee wants to offer easy access this time to people based in the north.
