Two Punch tenants have chosen to open their pub at weekday lunchtimes only, after a spate of violent incidents.

The licensees of the North-umberland in Reading, who declined to be named, decided not to trade in the evenings or at weekends for the time being.

Problems at the pub came to a head on the night of Liverpool's Champions League victory in May. Violence flared after the pub's TV was turned off before the game went into extra time.

And on 2 June, the pub's manager left after reporting that people had tried to break in. The building was shut until 21 June, when a replacement manager was brought in.

The licensees have now decided to only open the pub at lunchtime until they think the situation has improved.

A Punch spokesman said: 'An interim manager appointed by our tenants is currently in charge of the pub, which remains open to customers.

'Reduced opening hours of 11am to 3pm have been temporarily introduced. We hope to return to normal trading hours as soon as possible.

He added: 'The tenants are working closely with the police to resolve the situation.
