Regulars at an Essex pub are keeping themselves in shape thanks to a new fitness centre, which is part of the same building. More than 300 women have been regularly attending the Ladypace centre at Brendan's in Braintree since it opened in May.

Inge Hubrick, licensee at Brendan's, said: "It's proved very popular with the women who drink in the pub. It has benefited both of us."

On average around 100 women a day are using the facilities, which are open between 9am and 7.30pm.

Ms Hubrick added that she approached Ladypace about opening a facility after seeing an advert.

Paul Cary, co-founder of Ladypace and a former pub company operations director, agreed the space was suitable and set up a centre.

"Having senior experience of pub estates I know only too well how much spare space exists within the licensed trade that simply does not provide adequate profit these days," he said.

"We would love to help improve the situation."
