When you run out of cheese and onion crisps, is your excuse (a) the suppliers failed to deliver, (b) they perished when your cellar flooded or (c) aliens sucked them into their flying saucer with a tractor beam? If it's of the calibre of the third option, and you told the whopper convincingly, you stand a chance of winning the World's Biggest Liar contest!

A pub in the Lake District will host the rather unusual competition, sponsored by Jennings Brewery, next month.

Competitors from around the world will come together at the Bridge Inn in Santon Bridge, Cumbria with each given five minutes to tell the biggest lie they can. Judges will then decide a winner.

The competition dates back to the 19th century, when publican and tall tale-teller Will Ritson was crowned the World's Biggest Liar.

Jennings brand manager Gaynor Green said: "Jennings is delighted to be the sponsor of this competition. The event is always very competitive, and we have even had to ban members of the legal profession and politicians from entering - they're just too practised!"

Application forms and tickets are available from Whitehaven Civic Hall. For more information, telephone 01946 852821 or email civichalls@copelandbc.gov.uk.
