Bar staff working for one of Britain's biggest managed pubcos are to get a helping hand to give up the dreaded weed.

A partnership between Spirit Group, the managed pub division of Punch Taverns, and nicotine replacement giant Nicorette means staff at Spirit's 1,800 managed pubs will have exclusive access to a quitting helpline and free tools to help them kick the habit.

The initiative has been set up to coincide with Spirit banning smoking in its pubs' back of house areas from the start of this year.

Andrew Knight, managing director of Spirit, said: "We don't feel it would be fair simply to stop our people smoking in our back of house areas without offering help with giving up."

As well as a personal progress monitor and Nicorette Crisis Coin, which is designed to help smokers stay focused, any staff who call the quitting helpline in moments of desperation will also be sent a relaxation tape read by TV doctor Chris Steele.

Spirit currently has 38,000 employees and a survey revealed 55% were smokers.
