Andy Ives, from Tooting, south London on what he loves about pubs.
A friend of mine was recently taken ill while flying to America for his honeymoon. He finished telling me the story of mid-air emergency and foreign hospitals by saying "It was horrible. I just wanted to get back here". By this, he didn't mean home or England, he meant the Kings Head on Tooting High Road - which might seem strange if you were to think of it as just a place to buy and drink beer.
The Kings Head is a great pub. The barstaff know everyone's names and what they drink, and many of the locals are our friends. But that is not what makes it a great pub.
What does that is the fact that my friends and I have been going there for years, and as jobs, marriage and kids have forced us to see less and less of each other, the Kings Head remains the place where we regularly meet and catch up.
The Kings Head is my favorite pub because it is where I go to see my friends and because it is a very agreeable place to do so, especially when one of them has just cheated death at 30,000 feet...
