A mysterious website has been set up carrying the National Pubwatch name - but no-one at Pubwatch knows who's behind it.
David Jones - who claims to be a licensee has set up www.nationalpubwatch.co.uk.
The website's aims seem to be the same as the genuine National Pubwatch - which can be found at www.nationalpubwatch.org - but the two are not associated.
National Pubwatch honorary secretary Malcolm Eidmans told morningadvertiser.co.uk: "He's quite entitled to use the domain name. As we are a non-profit organisation, we took the .org option. My main concern is that people will think it is us. We've spent 10 years building up a reputation and I doubt the person behind the site has the resources and contacts we do."
The webiste is not fully functional at the moment and users cannot register to become members.
"I also fear there may be some kind of charge further down the line - as it is a commercial domain name," added Eidmans.
Morning Advertiser legal expert Peter Coulson said: "This is a common thing. People try to highjack organisations and hold companies to ransom. The annoying thing is he may divert attention - but if he attempts to pass himself off as National Pub Watch or benefit for the organisation then copyright law will kick in."
