Merrydown cider is celebrating a bumper summer of sales, with the latest AC Nielsen figures showing 13 per cent growth for the brand.
In fact Merrydown is outperforming a market which itself is booming - total cider sales rose by an unprecedented 10.5 per cent this summer
However, Chris Carr, managing director of Merrydown, believes that the new-found popularity of cider goes deeper than the "sunshine factor" and that buoyant cider sales are here to stay.
"It's the premium ciders which are driving market growth, rather than white ciders which continue to decline. There's evidence people are looking to premium products with natural ingredients. We are also delighted to report more and more women are enjoying cider," he said.
But he also said he was happy to see healthy cider sales across the board. "I am also pleased to see other premium ciders thriving. Customers are finally starting to recognise and appreciate the wonderful range and quality of the many premium, mainstream brands available."
