Adding a Greek twist to pub grub has helped the Henny Swan in Sudbury pub earn the accolade of Essex Dining Pub of the Year.

The pub features in the new launched 2007 edition of the Good Pub Guide. Operated on a Punch Taverns lease by licensees Harry and Sofia Charalambous, the Henny Swan underwent a £550,000 renovation two years ago, which included a new restaurant and kitchen.

Sofia's Greek origins are reflected in the menu, which was developed with consultant chef John Ripper. Dishes include grilled halloumi cheese wrapped in parma ham, and lemon sole and scallop filo parcels.

Harry said: "The menu used to be a touch pretentious and expensive, but the focus now is on value for money and a regularly changing menu of dishes which combine traditional and contemporary cooking."

As part of the makeover, all suppliers were reviewed and changed where necessary to use fresh, local ingredients.

The pub is on the banks of the River Stour, with a waterside garden that offers views of the Suffolk countryside across the river. Good Pub Guide listings are based on nominations by pub customers, with the guide's editors making awards to the best of those featured.
