Outside is where most of the work has been done. Before the refurbishment, the garden was plain, bland and soulless. Now a smart terrace has been created, complete with heated and lit umbrellas, known as jumbrellas.
Although the area was not built with the smoking ban in mind, it clearly fits the bill.
"Originally we thought about extending the building," says Godden. "But we got the designers in and came up with another solution - using the outside area as an extra dining space."
The terrace has been a roaring success despite only being open for the last part of summer. "We get many youngsters using the outside space," says Moon. "They are well behaved but can be a bit louder out there."
The pub has got a licence for live
entertainment outside from midday to 9.30pm. "We have had an open mike
session here already and it was really popular. I couldn't believe how busy the pub was."
The next stage will be to add a barbecue next summer. "We had so much on, we just didn't have time to do it this year," says Moon. "On the opening night we tested it out on the Shepherd Neame directors and it went down well. We will do home-made burgers and marinated clams and so it will be a bit more upmarket than simply cooking sausages."
