Constellation Europe, one of the UK's largest wine distributors, has revealed details of a major investment programme in the South West.

The US-headquartered group plans to build what it describes as the largest bonded warehouse in Europe, together with a new bottling facility and related office accommodation.

The new site will be close to Constellation's existing distribution centre in Avonmouth, near Bristol.

The amount of money being ploughed into the new site has not been confirmed, but it is understood to be tens of millions of pounds.

Building work on the warehouse and bottling plant is expected to commence in June, with the facilities being ready for business in early 2009. The new offices will be built once this construction project is completed.

Troy Christensen, Constellation Europe president, said the new facilities would see "a significant net increase of new employees in the South West", with up to a hundred new jobs being created.

Around 450 staff are based at Constellation's offices in Whitchurch, south Bristol.

The group said the new building would hopefully included a range of sustainable installations including solar panels, wind turbines and low carbon impact heating and cooling systems.
