Blackpool licensees fighting for the super casino have seen their hopes revived as the High Court has granted a request for a judicial review.

The British Casino Association has called for a review of the decision making claiming that existing casinos are being put under an unfair competitive disadvantage compared to the potential new casinos.

The High Court decision to grant a request for a judicial review over rules covering 17 new casinos planned by the government, is 'another blow' to casino legislation, the Liberal Democrats warned.

Liberal Democrat Shadow culture, media and Ssort Secretary, Don Foster MP said: "This development deals yet another blow to the ill-thought-out casino legislation that the government have tried to railroad through Parliament.

"Once again, the government has shown itself to be unaware of the gambling environment in Britain, even though Tessa Jowell seeks to introduce dramatic changes to it.

"If this judicial review is successful, it would significantly change the climate in which the new casino trial is due to take place.

"My continued calls for further scrutiny of the government's proposed casino legislation have gone unheeded. The government has no one to blame but itself for the mess it has created."

A three-day hearing is reported to be due for May 25.
