Lib Dem councillors in Edinburgh want the cities pubs and bars to open later in a bid to build a 'European café culture'.

Edinburgh's Lib Dem leader, Jenny Dawe, said it would help Edinburgh compete with major European rivals.

We've got some way to go to catch up with other cities.Edinburgh's Lib Dem leader, Jenny Dawe.

The party's manifesto for the local elections says there is a need to relax strict rules on opening and closing times for businesses, particularly in the summer.

Dawes told the Scotsman newspaper: "We've got some way to go to catch up with other cities.

"You only have to travel around Europe to see how much later bars and restaurants are open.

"We want to have much more of that 24-hour culture in the city than there is at the moment.

"We also want to see shops in the city centre open much later than they do at the moment, and it seems ridiculous to have pavement cafes being taken away and parks and gardens closing down as early as they do at the moment."
