A new survey claims that two-thirds of non-smokers want to ban smoking outdoors as well as in public buildings.

With less than two weeks before the ban in England comes into effect, internet survey provider Ciao Surveys has found that 63.3% of non-smokers also want to ban smoking in public spaces outdoors.

These results show that the smoking ban is a highly polarising issue in this countryRichard Thornton, vice president of client development, Ciao Surveys.

The company even says 12.9% of smokers agree that smoking outdoors should be banned, while 83.3% of smokers are opposed to such a ban.

The survey also showed a sharp divide between the attitudes of smokers and non-smokers to the indoor ban.

It found 89.5% of non-smokers were in favour of the ban, as opposed to only 36.3% of smokers.

"These results show that the smoking ban is a highly polarising issue in this country," said Richard Thornton, vice president of client development, Ciao Surveys.

"It seems really intuitive that smokers would be opposed to a ban while non-smokers would be in favour. What is interesting though is the divide amongst non-smokers about whether or not there should be an outdoor ban as well."
