Former Pubwatch chief is licensing minister
Gerry Sutcliffe named as licensing minister

The former president of National Pubwatch, Gerry Sutcliffe, has been named as the new licensing minister.

Sutcliffe, MP for Bradford South and former minister at the Ministry of Justice, replaces Shaun Woodward in the role following the reshuffle of ministers after Gordon Brown became Prime Minister last week.

I'm pleased to see that somebody who has concerned himself with pubwatch has this post in licensing. National Pubwatch's honorary secretary Malcolm Eidmans.

This also saw former licensing minister James Purnell return to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as secretary of state for Culture, Media and Sport.

Sutcliffe had to resign his role as National Pubwatch's president after he gained a ministerial role in the Department of Trade and Industry in 2003.

National Pubwatch's honorary secretary Malcolm Eidmans said: "I'm pleased to see that somebody who has concerned himself with pubwatch has this post in licensing. I think he has a better understanding of the realities of the trade than his predecessors."

The Home Office has confirmed that Vernon Coaker is to remain in his role in the Department, following the appointment of Jacqui Smith as the new Home Secretary.
