Happy Mondays' frontman Shaun Ryder could face a fine after he reportedly smoked several cigarettes during the band's concert in Manchester

Happy Mondays' frontman Shaun Ryder could face a fine after he smoked several cigarettes during the band's concert in Manchester, according to reports.

Fans said he lit "cigarette after cigarette" throughout the gig at The Ritz on Whitworth Street on Saturday.

No matter how big he thinks he is, he is not above the law.

"There will be no breaches of this law in ManchesterPat Karney from Manchester City Council.

Pat Karney from Manchester City Council said: "The Ritz will get a visit from environmental health straight away."

The BBC reports members of the audience started smoking as a result of Ryder's actions.

Karney - clearly unimpressed by the cult of celebrity - told them: "No matter how big he thinks he is, he is not above the law.

"There will be no breaches of this law in Manchester."

Stuart Green, general manager at The Ritz, said staff had enforced the ban and the club welcomed the new legislation.

Meanwhile Courtney Love former wife of rocker Kurt Cobain and lead singer of the band Hole has reacted angrily to the ban.

She said this week: "The only place I can smoke in England is the Houses of Parliament! That's so retarded!"
