Brewers have been forced to pull the plug on the Northern Beer & Fine Food Show after the event ran up unsustainable losses.

Organisers, the Yorkshire & North East Beer & Pub Association, have confirmed the show, which was due to take place in Harrogate in October, has been cancelled.

The association said the show had failed to attract sufficient footfall through the doors over the previous two years. Secretary Lee Le Clercq said: "We decided that the losses over the first two years were unsustainable. The show proved its worth in other ways, but was unviable. It could be that, in the fullness of time, it might be revived."

The show was first staged in 2005 and was funded by money that had been lying unused in one of the association's accounts.

A highlight of the show was the appearance of top personality chefs to profile beer with food using the best regional produce.

Although the show received the backing of most northern brewers, it is understood the British Beer & Pub Association was disappointed at the support from other brewing companies across the UK.
