Door workers in the pub industry have been praised and recognised for the first time for their contribution to the safety of staff and customers.

Speaking at the ConflictPro conference in London, Princess Anne - the president of Victim Support - highlighted how training staff in conflict management was showing results in pubs, bars and clubs, as wells as in the NHS and the Ambulance Service.

Following the conference the first Conflict Professional award for door supervisors, sponsored by the BIIAB and City and Guilds, was presented.

Scott Gornall of Professional Security UK scooped the award for his "outstanding performance" as manager of Norman's nightclub in Leeds city centre venue.

Gornall was praised by his bosses for becoming an ambassador for the company and "offering an example of the benefits quality doormen can bring to a venue".

Cathie Smith, director of BIIAB, said the new award "provided a great incentive for door supervisors to put themselves forward and be rewarded for the good work they do".

David Pattinson, head door supervisor from FGH Security in Lancaster won the BII sponsored Conflict Professional Licensed Retail Award.

Pattinson implemented new queuing procedures to provide a less agitated environment for security staff and customers.

A highly commended award went to Blake Golding who works as head doorman for Regency Security, which has its headquarters in Braintree, Essex.

Golding, a victim of a glassing attack, has launched with his family the POP campaign to drive replacement of glass with polycarbonate glasses.
