Welsh regional brewer SA Brain is looking north, and west, in a bid to expand its estate from 260 to 350 pubs.

"Brains continues to invest and has an ongoing strategy to grow the estate to a size which brings economies of scale, but doesn't allow the business to lose touch with the customers or become impersonal," says sales director Philip Lay. "It has never been our ambition to become a 1,000 strong pubco. We do want to acquire more pubs but they have to be the right opportunity, offering the right location at the right price.

"Our aim is to reach 200 tenanted houses while maintaining around 150 managed houses.

"As part of these plans, we are looking to acquire more pubs in the West and North of Wales as well as outside our recognised geography, in the west of England."

Brains has just completed a deal on its most north westerly pub, the Penhelig Arms in Aberdovey, described by Lay as " typical of the type of pubs we are looking to develop".

"It's a rounded quality business with a good bar trade combined with excellent food and top quality bedrooms in a traditional pub environment."
