Throwing glass away will be a thing of the past for Carlsberg customers after the brewer launched a new environmentally-friendly initiative.

Carlsberg UK has teamed-up with recycling specialists Biffa to create the Carlsberg Green scheme which it claims will save licensees more than £500 a year.

Licensees simply need to dump all their old glass into a Carlsberg Green glass bin and it will then be picked up for recycling.

David Scott, head of on-trade customer marketing for Carlsberg UK, said landfill tax is set to increase year-on-year by £8 per tonne - adding an extra 20 per cent on publican's disposal costs.

He said: "In the current economic climate, we realised that the tax changes will hit pubs' bottom lines by a significant amount.

"Carlsberg Green addresses this problem by helping publicans comply with legislative changes, reduce waste and offset recycling costs."

Joanna Byrnes, licensee of the Kings Arms in Manchester, has already signed up to Carlsberg Green.

She said: "We felt really guilty chucking out our glass with the rest of the rubbish.

"I was really happy to find that Carlsberg was offering this scheme, as it's the answer to all of our recycling problems."

Carlsberg Green is being piloted in Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds.
