Industry chiefs have welcomed a call by MP Greg Mulholland to save the British pub.

In a letter sent out to 12 industry bodies, the Liberal Democrat has urged the trade to unite and invited them to attend a meeting at the Houses of Parliament in May.

He said: "We are all aware of the very serious situation that pubs are facing, made much worse by the recent increase in beer duty and it is my belief that there is now a need for a national, umbrella campaign that we can all unite under to save the great British pub."

The move has won widespread support from industry figures.

BII chief executive John McNamara said: "We have had the invitation and we will certainly be there. We will work with anyone to do anything to make sure we get this message across to the government."

Mike Benner, chief executive of the Campaign for Real Ale, added: "Community pubs face unprecedented challenges and the trade, industry bodies, consumer groups, the media and politicians must now come together to agree a coherent strategy. The time for action is upon us."

The Liberal Democrat set out four goals for the campaign including lobbying government to support the British pub and opposing increases in beer duty.

Encouraging customers to visit local pubs and campaign for reform of planning laws are also on the list.
