Why they are on the list:
Farron and Mulholland are two Liberal Democrat MPs who have nailed their colours to the trade mast over the past 12 months. Farron is MP for Westmorland, while Mulholland represents Leeds North West. Both MPs are critical of aspects of the tenanted pubco/licensee relationship and
Farron has called for Commons debate on their activities.
What the past year has held:
Farron tabled a Commons Early Day Motion earlier this year expressing concern about the role of the big pubcos and their effect on small community pubs' ability to trade. Mulholland launched a campaign to save the British pub following the
4p-a-pint Budget duty increase. The MP was not quite so popular when he launched another campaign to force pubs to stock smaller 125ml wine glasses.
Both will need to keep the momentum going to ensure that these issues remain on the agenda. But Farron and Mulholland have made an effective start and turned a few heads with their forthright comments.
