Licensing ministers past and present are among the MPs meeting publicans today as Proud of Pubs Week reaches its peak.

Licensees across the country have been inviting in their MPs for a meeting today to mark the week: to talk about the good things pubs do, to discuss the challenges facing the industry, and to create a PR opportunity for local press.

The current licensing minister Gerry Sutcliffe got in touch with the campaign team this week following the different events going on in Westminster - and is now visiting the Six Acres pub in his Bradford South constituency today.

"As I've said before, pubs are an integral part of our society and it's really important that we all appreciate them and show them our support," Sutclliffe told The Publican.

"That's why I'm visiting the Six Acres in Proud of Pubs Week."

Former licensing minister James Purnell meanwhile is visiting the Stalybridge Station Buffet Bar in his constituency tonight to meet with licensee John Hesketh.

Other high-profile MPs meeting licensees today include ex-Tory leader Michael Howard, who is at the British Lion in Folkestone, while Justice Secretary Jack Straw visited the Spreadeagle in Blackburn to mark the campaign last week.

The Publican's columnist Greg Mulholland, who has led the Proud of Pubs Week celebrations in Parliament this week, is hosting a constituency surgery in the White Swan in Yeadon, West Yorkshire.
