JD Wetherspoon has been presented with a Green Champions Award in recognition of its commitment to the environment.
The pub chain won the award for 'environmental best practice and sustainable development' due to its recycling efforts and the environmentally friendly steps taken by individual pubs within the chain.
Wetherspoon fought off more than 500 nominations in its 'commerce and industry' category to be one of only three UK companies recognised with an award by the Green Organisation.
The judges commented: "Wetherspoon operates a large distribution centre at Daventry, Northamptonshire that serves all of its pubs.
"Lorries return to the depot empty and by simply putting the recyclables into these lorries, the company has diverted 16,000 tonnes from landfill and generates an income that offsets the investment."
Wetherspoon head of corporate affairs, Caroline Walters, said: "We are delighted to be named as a Green Champion.
"Wetherspoon takes its environmental responsibility seriously and the award recognises this."
