The World Pie Eating Championships 2008, due to be held at a Wigan pub, will offer a pay-per-view option for internet users.

The event will take place on 16 December at the Yesteryear-owned Harry's Bar in Wallgate with the start time shifted to 9am to cater for audiences abroad.

"We believe that pay-per-view is an exciting new revolution," said Yesteryear owner Tony Callaghan. "Once viewers send us a Postal Order or transfer money to my bank then we'll tell them the name of the website where they can watch the competition."

He added: "There was good money changing hands at the other end of the bar last year, which indicates clear potential — so we will be making a particular effort to invite competitors of Far Eastern origin to compete in this year's championships in a bid to create local interest over there and get a share of betting revenues, or, better still, create pay-per-view demand out in Beijing and Tokyo."

The official pie dimensions for the competition are a 12cm diameter and a depth of 3.5cm. They must contain 66% meat.
