Merchant Inns has launched an initiative to encourage pet owners to stay at its inns.

The Pets Innvited scheme is on offer at five of Merchant Inns six sites and includes a doggie bag at check-in with home made treats, dog toy and a list of local walks and pet services in the area.

Food and water bowls for use during the stay and disposable litter boxes for cats will also be available on request. The cost is £10 per room per night.

A number of pet friendly rooms are being designated in each inn and each room is deep cleaned after the pet checks out.

Pet rooms will be inspected upon check out and a minimum cleaning fee of £100 will be charged in the event of any damage in the room.

The company is allowing a maximum of two pets per room and a 75 pound weight limit for well behaved dogs.

A spokeswoman said: "The company decided to launch Pets Innvited after listening to their guests, many of whom don't like to leave their pets behind when they travel.

"Sometimes they have to if they are going abroad, but now that we are rediscovering holidays in the UK because of the credit crunch and the weak pound, people are looking for places where not only baby comes too, but dog comes too."

Malmaison offers a similar scheme at its hotels at £10 per stay for the pet with a dog basket and water bowl provided.
